Three weeks a year, Alsace is no longer the same. From late August for pinots and crémants, through to mid-October for rieslings and grands crus, the villages transform. Tractors in the streets, harvest hands eating lunch on the squares, cellars open, and a scent of must drifting everywhere. If you have never been here during the harvest, you have not seen Alsace.
It is also a moment when you need to know what you are doing. Badly planned, a harvest getaway means traffic jams in Riquewihr and frustration. Well planned, it becomes three days out of time.

When exactly: harvest dates
Dates shift each year with the weather, but the window is stable:
- →Late August - early September: pinot noir and grapes for crémants
- →Mid-September: sylvaner, pinot blanc, pinot auxerrois
- →Late September - early October: riesling and muscat — peak activity
- →Mid-October: grands crus, gewurztraminers, late harvest
Our advice
The best week is generally the last of September — peak activity, still mild temperatures (15-22 °C), the leaves turning colour. Weekends are busy, weekdays remain manageable.
The 4 villages where to experience the harvest as a couple
Riquewihr
The most iconic. Medieval lanes packed on Saturdays but magical early on a weekday morning. At Hugel, guided wine tasting at €35 per person on reservation. Our favourite lunch: Au Trotthus.
Mittelbergheim
600 inhabitants, 30 winemakers. Far less visited than Riquewihr. An authentic feel — you cross paths with harvest hands at the café at 7 a.m. Visits at André Rieffel or Albrecht.
Andlau
Our favourite village for a harvest lunch. Au Bœuf Rouge serves a special harvest menu (4 courses, wine included) at €38. Family atmosphere, real winemakers at the next table.
Eguisheim
More touristy but splendid. Ideal for the photograph, less so for genuine encounters with winemakers. Léon Beyer wine tasting recommended.
5 must-do experiences
A wine tasting at the foot of the vines
Several wine estates offer tastings out among the vines during the harvest. Our favourite: Domaine Schoenheitz at Wihr-au-Val (on reservation, €25/pers., 2 hours, 5 wines + a cheese platter). Breathtaking view.
A walk through the vines mid-harvest
The Riquewihr vineyard trail (3 km, perfectly signposted) crosses 5 grands crus. Best done mid-morning, when harvest hands are at work. You can stop, talk — most are happy to explain.
A winemaker lunch
Several wine estates open their tables during the harvest. Book 1 month in advance. Allow €45-60 per person, wines included. Never touristy: you eat with the seasonal workers, that is its magic.
The Barr harvest festival
First weekend of October. More authentic than Colmar's (too industrial). Winemakers' procession, free tastings in town, a village atmosphere. Avoid Saturday evening if you want quiet — favour Sunday lunchtime.
A cellar visit during pressing
A few rare wine estates allow visitors to watch the pressing in action. Trimbach in Ribeauvillé by appointment. Hugel in Riquewihr too. A hypnotic spectacle, an unforgettable scent. Ask explicitly when you book.
Itinerary for a 3-day weekend (Friday-Sunday)
Friday evening — arrival and winstub in Mittelbergheim
Arrival at the suite around 5 p.m. A small drink, shower, leave at 7 p.m. Dinner at Caveau Nartz in Mittelbergheim — an authentic winstub at the heart of the vines. Back before midnight.
Saturday morning — Riquewihr vineyard trail (start 9 a.m.)
3 km walk, wine tasting at Hugel at 11 a.m. (booked 1 month ahead). Lunch at Au Trotthus. Afternoon: stroll through Riquewihr then Ribeauvillé. Back to the suite at 5 p.m. for a rest.
Saturday evening — gastronomy or tradition
If you want gastronomic: Auberge de l'Ill (3 stars, 1 hour from the suite). If tradition: winstub Au Cep de Vigne in Innenheim, 20 min from the suite, sensible prices, house foie gras.
Sunday — harvest festival (October) or hidden estate
Early October: festival in Barr in the morning, lunch on site. Otherwise: wine tasting at Schoenheitz in Wihr-au-Val (appointment 11 a.m., €25/pers., 2 hours). Heading home in late afternoon.
Where to stay: 3 suites for a peaceful return
After a day in the busy villages, returning to the suite has to feel like a real contrast. Three suites lend themselves particularly well:
Three moods for three different rhythms:
La Forêt Enchantée
A wood-and-nature atmosphere. The perfect contrast after a day in the vines. Outdoor hot tub.
La Suite Cosy
More intimate, ideal if you come back late and just want to collapse into a soft cocoon.
Le Palais des Mille et Une Nuits
For those who want to extend the journey with a private hammam after the vineyard trail.
