Michelin-starred tables in Alsace: where to celebrate a big moment together

Alsace counts more than 25 Michelin stars within 200 km. It is one of the highest concentrations in France — the legacy of a region that has always taken eating seriously, and where several great families (Haeberlin, Westermann, Nasti, Schillinger) have turned cooking into an art of transmission.

For a birthday, a proposal, a milestone wedding anniversary, it is a rare playing field. Here are our addresses, ranked not by stars but by the moment they know how to create for two.

In this article

  • → Three stars: the experience of a lifetime
  • → Two stars: absolute maturity
  • → Our one-star favourites
  • → Composing the perfect evening around dinner
  • → Extending the night in our suites

Three stars: l'Auberge de l'Ill

In the three-star category, Alsace has only one address: l'Auberge de l'Ill, in Illhaeusern. Three stars since 1967 — a French record. Marc Haeberlin carries on the work of his father Paul. The setting of a great riverside house, a garden along the Ill, service at the highest level, sublimated Alsatian cooking (the frogs' legs mousseline, the soufflé salmon, the pigeon Mère Adèle).

Allow €250 to €320 per person for the tasting menus, plus the wine pairing. Book three months ahead for a Saturday evening.

Two stars: absolute maturity

To our minds, this is the most interesting category as a couple: the precision is total, the invention still in motion, and the bill remains contained (between €150 and €220 per person).

Le Chambard — Olivier Nasti

Kaysersberg. The finest game cooking in Alsace. Medieval setting, exceptional game in season, estate wines paired throughout.

La Fourchette des Ducs — Nicolas Stamm

Obernai. The great Alsatian classic, reinterpreted. Elegant dining room, precise service, reasonable prices for the level (menus from €145).

1741 — Guillaume Scheer

Strasbourg, a townhouse on Rue des Hallebardes. A delightful setting, inventive cooking, ideal for a birthday in the heart of the city.

Au Crocodile — Romain Brillat

Strasbourg, an institution since 1972. Recently restored, the return of well-deserved stars. For lovers of culinary history.

Our one-star favourites

If the budget of two and three stars feels unreasonable for the evening, these addresses offer a comparable experience for half the price:

JY's — Jean-Yves Schillinger

Colmar, on the Petite Venise. Travelling cuisine, contemporary atmosphere. Our favourite address in Colmar.

L'Atelier du Peintre — Loïc Lefebvre

Also in Colmar. A small dining room, a great chef, tasting menus at €95. Tables are rare.

Le 7ème Continent — Laurent Haller

Rixheim, near Mulhouse. Signature cuisine, pared-back setting. A perfectly deserved star.

L'Atelier 116 — Cédric Deckert

Brunstatt. The new Alsatian scene, a young chef, sensible prices, overflowing creativity.

Composing the perfect evening

A starred dinner is not just a meal. It is three hours during which you sit face to face, with no phone, no interruption, tasting extraordinary things. So that the rest of the evening lives up to it, here is how we orchestrate it:

1

4 pm — settling in at the suite

Arrive early at the suite, hot tub, a nap together, shower, get ready unhurried.

2

6.30 pm — aperitif at a wine estate

If possible, book a tasting at a winemaker between the suite and the restaurant (Trimbach in Ribeauvillé, Hugel in Riquewihr, Pfister in Dahlenheim). It sets the tone for the evening.

3

8 pm — sitting down to dinner

Arrive relaxed, taste, take your time. Choose the shorter tasting menu (5-6 courses) over the long one if you still want to enjoy the suite afterwards.

4

11.30 pm — back to the suite

The return is part of the pleasure: no anonymous hotel lobby, you step back into a private world. Herbal tea, balcony, hot tub at your own rhythm.

Where to extend the night

The only real flaw of a starred dinner is the return: you have lived a moment of great emotion, and sometimes come back to a merely functional room. Our suites have been designed to be worthy of the dinner — not a compromise for the night, but the natural extension of the evening.

Our booking advice

For a starred Saturday evening, book the table three months ahead and the suite at the same time. Both fill up quickly, especially around Valentine's Day, late November and the holiday season.

Compose your exceptional evening

We know the chefs and the estates. If you would like help orchestrating the evening — table, tasting, transport — do get in touch, with pleasure.
