There is something deeply romantic about a medieval ruin. A collapsed tower, a view stretching thirty kilometres, the silence of the wind in the firs — that is what the castles of Alsace offer to a couple willing to walk a little and look a great deal.
Here are our five favourites. Not the largest. Not the best known. The ones best suited to a day shared as two.

Why visit a castle as a couple
The castles of Alsace are not visited like a museum. You climb (sometimes thirty minutes on foot), arrive out of breath, and suddenly the view opens up. It is that shared moment before the panorama that makes all the difference: you stop, sit down, breathe — and feel that you have earned something.
The five castles to discover
Haut-Kœnigsbourg (Orschwiller)
The essential one. 757 m above sea level, restored by Wilhelm II in 1908. Full interior tour (1 h 30), sweeping panorama. Avoid weekends in season.
Fleckenstein (Lembach)
The cliff castle of the Northern Vosges. Coal-burners' trail, halls carved into the rock, views across to the German border. Quiet and magnificent.
Three Castles of Eguisheim
Dagsbourg, Wahlenbourg, Weckmund — three keeps along a single ridge. A one-hour walk from Husseren-les-Châteaux. Outstanding sunsets.
Hohlandsbourg (Wintzenheim)
A platform at 620 m facing the plain. Medieval re-enactments in season. Views over Colmar, the Black Forest and the Sundgau.
Lichtenberg (Northern Vosges)
Our quiet favourite. Vauban fortress, 360° panorama, almost never crowded.
Our medieval weekend itinerary
Saturday morning — Haut-Kœnigsbourg
Arrive at 9.30 (opening). 1 h 30 inside, 30 min on the terraces. Leave around noon, before the coaches arrive.
Saturday lunch — Saint-Hippolyte
At the foot of the castle. Winstub Au Cep de Vigne or Hôtel Munsch. Classic Alsatian cooking, wines from local estates.
Saturday afternoon — Three Castles of Eguisheim
Walk up from Husseren (1 h one way). Views over the plain, panorama at sunset. Allow three hours round trip with breaks.
Sunday — Hohlandsbourg or Fleckenstein
Depending on your energy. Hohlandsbourg if you want comfort (road up to the foot), Fleckenstein if you want adventure (45 min through the forest).
Where to stay between visits
Medieval castles tire you out pleasantly. You walk, you climb, you breathe deeply — and returning to the suite in the evening is part of the pleasure. Three suites in particular extend that sense of stepping out of time:
Our pick after a day among castles:
Secret de Cléopâtre
Theatrical ancient setting. The contrast with a medieval day is total — you travel twice.
Palais Mille et Une Nuits
The oriental palace. A journey across time and place, warm and intimate.
Cocoon Terracotta
More contemporary but enveloping in its warmth. Ideal to recover after a day on foot.
Our advice
Check the opening hours (they vary by season), bring closed walking shoes (no sandals!), and download the Visit Alsace app for audio commentary. No booking is needed for most castles, except for Haut-Kœnigsbourg in high season.
Book your medieval getaway
Our suites lie less than 40 minutes from the five castles mentioned. You set off in the morning, return in the evening, and the magic of another time carries on inside the suite.
